[EN] Entering Fort Matanzas National Monument. This Spanish fort was built in 1742 and is situated on the Rattlesnake Island on the Matanzas River. Matanzas is Spanish for "massacres" and relates to the events that took place here in 1565. When Spanish forces landed on the present site of St. Augustine to dislodge French Huguenot forces from Fort Caroline - see our trip at http://www.a-trip.com/tracks/view/64605 - a French fleet under Jean Ribault decided to attack them. Jean Ribaults fleet was destroyed by a hurricane and shipwrecked on an island south of St. Augustine. After destroying Fort Caroline, the Spanish forces captured the stranded French troops and killed about 250 of the Huguenots saving only Catholics and a few artisans needed at the new settlement of St. Augustine.

[EN] Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. As St. Augustine was frequently attacked and burned by pirates and British fleet, this impressive fort was built in 1672. It successfully defended the city from an attack in 1702 and in 1740. It was also a base for the Spanish fleet that protected Spanish ships sailing along the Florida coast to Europe using the Gulf Stream. Together with Fort Matanzas, Castillo de San Marcos was proclaimed a National Monument in 1924.

Fort był także bazą hiszpańskiej floty chroniącej wybrzeża Florydy, wzdłuż której hiszpańskie statki płynęły do Europy wykorzystując Prąd Zatokowy (także Golfsztrom, Golfstrom). [EN] The Minorcan Heritage. In 1768, Scottish physician Dr. Andrew Turnbull established the colony of "New Smyrna" in Florida to grow hemp, sugarcane, indigo, and to produce rum. Turnbull transplanted around 1500 settlers, from Minorca, Majorca, Ibiza, Smyrna, Crete, Mani Peninsula (Greece), and Sicily to work on this plantation. The colony suffered major losses due to insect-borne diseases and Native American raids; and tensions grew due to mistreatment by Turnbull. Due to these complications, the remaining colonists marched in 1777 north to St. Augustine along the Old King's Highway, to claim mistreatment by Turnbull to the Governor of Florida in St. Augustine. Most of the settlers, about 1,300 were from the Spanish Minorca Island. Their descendents in St. Augustine still preserve Minorcan cuisine and religious festivals.

[EN] On the second day of our three-day-long trip to Florida we visited St. Augustine. First we drove south of the city to visit the Fort Matanzas National Monument. Next, we drove to downtown St. Augustine and visited the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument followed by a trolley tour of St. Augustine. After selecting sites to visit on foot, we walked a couple of hours in St. Augustine. Finally, we went for dinner to the very well known Spanish Columbia Restaurant. Late evening we returned to the La Quinta Motel in Jacksonville.

Entering Fort Matanzas National Monument

The Minorcan Heritage

Grace Methodist Church was built by Henry Flagler in 1887 to replace a wooden building that stood on a site where Flagler wanted to build the Alcazar Hotel. Henry Flagler, a successful businessman and a partner of John D. Rockefeller in the Standard Oil Company arrived in St. Augustine in 1883. He built several hotels and churches in the style of Spanish Renaissance. Flagler also founded West Palm Beach, Miami, and built a railroad to Key West.
