[EN] This was the first day of our six day long trip to Cumberland Island in southeast Georgia. We drove first to St. Simons Island to visit the Fort Frederica National Monument and then continued to the town of St. Marys on the St. Marys River that forms part of the Georgia border with Florida. The Visitor Center of the Cumberland Island National Seashore is located on the riverfront and the passenger ferry to Cumberland Island leaves from there. The number of visitors to the Island is strictly regulated, so the reservation of ferry tickets and of campsites on the Island has to be made about 6 months in advance. Please visit http://www.nps.gov/cuis/index.htm for more information.

[EN] Until 1732 the English and Spanish colonies in the southeast of North America were separated by a tract of land between the Carolinas and Florida that was not settled by either side since the abandonment of Spanish missions in Georgia in the late 16th century. With the establishment of the British colony of Georgia and founding of the town of Savannah on the southern bank of the Savannah River, both sides prepared for the defense of their claims. British General James Edward Oglethorpe, after founding Savannah, established a fortified settlement and a fort on the St. Simons Island in 1736. Four years later, Oglethorpe unsuccessfully attacked the Spanish Florida town of St. Augustine. Spain in turn attacked St. Simons Island in 1742 with a large force. Due to confusion and lack of knowledge of forces, the Spanish army decided to withdraw after two skirmishes - one close to Fort Frederica and another further south in a place later called Bloody Marsh.

[EN] Shortly after the battles in 1742, a truce was arranged between Spain and Britain. In effect, the fort was abandoned and the town around the fort lost its importance. After 1758, it has outlived its purpose and fell into ruin. In early 20th century, only two fragments of walls existed. In 1903, Georgia Society of Colonial Dames of America started a movement to preserve the ruins. The land was purchased with the collected money and donated to the National Park Service. The National Monument was established in 1945. Extensive archeological investigations were aided by detailed records preserved in British archives.
Fort opuszczono a miasto powoli pustoszało.

This impressive bridge, completed in 2003, allows container ships to enter Brunswick, which is the fourth-largest automobile port in the eastern United States. The previous bridge, built in 1956, was struck in 1972 by the ship African Neptune, causing parts of the bridge to collapse and causing several cars to fall into the water. Ten deaths were caused by the accident. On May 3, 1987 the bridge was again struck by a ship, this time by the Polish (sic!) freighter Ziemia Białostocka.

Poprzedni most, zbudowany w roku 1956, został uderzony w roku 1972 przez statek African Neptune. W wyniku uderzenia, część mostu się załamała i kilka samochodów spadło do rzeki. Dziesięć osób zginęło w tym wypadku. Dnia 3 maja 1987 roku, polski (sic!) statek Ziemia Białostocka uderzył w most.

[EN] Cumberland Island NS Museum on Osborne Street - the light colored building on the left. In addition to a very nice exhibit and slide show describing the nature of the Island, this Museum commemorates the attack of British forces on St. Marys in the War of 1812. This sacking of St. Marys and occupation did not prevent the defeat of the British expedition in the Battle of New Orleans (December 23, 1814, to January 26, 1815). In addition, this Museum shows a lot of pictures and artifacts from the times when the Carnegie family owned the Island and constructed many spectacular mansions.
