My first real hike in Hawai'i and my brother-in-law, Ed and I hit the Aiea Loop Trail just outside Honolulu on the island of Oahu. Unfortunately we had a little extra hike on the asphalt road to the trailhead, but it worked out in the end after we got off the trail, allowing a fairly easy downhill back to the car.

Prior to hiking this trail, I had read that the trails on Oahu can be really muddy. This hike proved that without question. Ed and I were slipping around on various parts of the trail and rarely hiked on dry ground. The mud isn't that big a deal unless it sends you sliding down the side of one of these very step ridges.

One of the obstacles we frequently had to negotiate were downed trees crossing the trail. It would seem that when a tree falls across the trail, it is just left there. Most were easy to pass, but a couple of them were a little tricky.

The frequent rains make for a dense jungle here that is lush and green. The beginning and end of the trail was planted with lemon eucalyptus trees and Norfolk Island pine trees by foresters.

This hike is easy to get to and a lot of fun. I recommend it if you're in the area.
