The only difference I see between sports and travel is that sports takes a waypoint every 5 seconds, travel does it every 15 seconds.
Each waypoint takes up a few bytes of memory storage and presumably also uses some power.
Travel would therefore allow you to track longer without running out of juice and RAM.
Anyone going on a sea cruise could perhaps make do with a waypoint every half hour and could save that in his/her own user defined setting.
Perhaps one of the moderators could confirm this or point out any error?

For the distance, @trip PC / mobile software will calculate by itself automatically. You will see the distance information when you export your trip as Sports mode
